When To Call 911 vs. Non-Emergency

Content - January Week 4 - 911 vs. Non-Emergency (Updated)

Everyone knows to dial 911 in the case of an emergency, but what if it’s not an emergency? Generally, 911 is reserved for in-progress crimes and life-threatening situations, while the OC Sheriff’s Department non-emergency lines (949-770-6011 and 714-647-7000) should be used to report crimes that are not in progress, complaints, and other similar situations. It’s important to know the difference so as to not tie up important resources for those that need help immediately. If you are ever unsure of which number to dial, please err on the side of caution and dial 911. For additional resources and the ability to file certain reports online, visit the OC Sheriff’s Department website, or check out the FAQ page by clicking here
