Mayor Pro Tem Mike Munzing
Mike Munzing served as Mayor of Aliso Viejo in 2016 and was selected by his colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for 2019.
He grew up in Orange, Calif. as the youngest of four children and the son of a pastor. He worked full time to put himself through college and holds a BS Degree from California State University, Fullerton with a dual-major in Real Estate Finance and Industrial Marketing.
As a lifelong resident of Orange County, Mike has spent more than 30 years building a successful career covering both the real estate and mortgage industries. With the last 25 years focused on residential mortgage lending, he was quick to recognize the negative effects of government intervention in mortgage lending, which resulted in his refusal to participate in the subprime, stated income and Alt-A lending bonanza that swept the country throughout much of the last decade and lead to the world’s financial crisis in 2007. In addition to Mike’s duties on Aliso Viejo’s City Council, he also serves as a Director for the 12th District of Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG); as a Regional Council member of Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG); and as an alternate member of the Aliso Creek Watershed.
In June of 2012, Mike was re-elected to his second term on the Orange County Republican Party’s Central Committee (OCGOP) in the newly expanded 73rd Assembly District, which covers a large portion of South Orange County, and was quickly asked to join its Executive Board as an Advisor to the Chairman. With a growing reputation as a fighter for limited government policies, Mike has also been appointed as a delegate to the CA Republican Party where he was elected to the prestigious CAGOP “Platform Committee” by CA Assemblywoman Diane Harkey.
Though Mike has become a familiar face in the local, state and national political arena, he has maintained his commitment to the local Aliso Viejo community, where he and his wife Erin are active at Coast Hills Community Church. Mike is a founding member of Aliso Viejo’s Chamber of Commerce, an affiliate member of Aliso Viejo Republican Women’s Federated, a 20-plus-year member of the OC Association of Realtors and a volunteer at Tustin’s OC Rescue Mission, Second Harvest Food Bank, and numerous other organizations.
A strong believer in fitness, Mike enjoys hiking and mountain biking in Aliso Woods Park, working out at 24 Hour Fitness, and pitching for the Coast Hills’ softball team at Aliso Viejo’s Community Park, where he recently helped them win the league championship.
