Mayor Pro Tem Mike Munzing

Mike Munzing was selected by his colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for 2023. He served the residents of Aliso Viejo as Mayor in 2016 and 2020.  He also served as Mayor Pro Tem in 2019.

Mike grew up in Orange, Calif. as the youngest of four children and the son of a pastor. He worked full time to put himself through college and holds a BS Degree from California State University, Fullerton with a dual-major in Real Estate Finance and Industrial Marketing.

As a lifelong resident of Orange County, Mike has spent more than 30 years building a successful career covering both the real estate and mortgage industries. The last 25 years, he focused on residential mortgage lending and quickly recognized the negative effects of government intervention in mortgage lending. This resulted in his refusal to participate in the subprime, stated income and Alt-A lending bonanza that swept the country throughout much of the last decade, leading to the world’s financial crisis in 2007.

In addition to Mike’s duties on Aliso Viejo’s City Council, he previously served as a Director for San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA); a Director for the 12th District of Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG); as a Regional Council member of Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG); and was an alternate member of the Aliso Creek Watershed.

In June of 2016, Mike was re-elected to his third term on the Orange County Republican Party’s Central Committee (OCGOP) in the 73rd Assembly District, which covers a large portion of South Orange County, and was asked to join its Executive Board as an Advisor to the Chairman. With a growing reputation as a fighter for limited government policies, Mike has also been appointed as a delegate to the CA Republican Party, where he has served numerous cycles on the CAGOP “Platform Committee”.

Though Mike has become a familiar face in the local, state and national political arena, he has maintained his commitment to the local Aliso Viejo community, where he and his wife Erin are active at Crossline Community Church. Mike is a founding member of Aliso Viejo’s Chamber of Commerce, an affiliate member of Aliso Viejo Republican Women’s Federated, a 26-plus-year member of the OC Association of Realtors and has volunteered at Tustin’s OC Rescue Mission, Second Harvest Food Bank, and numerous other organizations.

A strong believer in fitness, Mike has enjoyed hiking and mountain biking in Aliso Woods Park, working out at 24 Hour Fitness, and pitching for a number of recreational softball teams at Aliso Viejo’s Community Park.
